National Mentoring Month

National Mentoring Month is held each January to promote youth mentoring in the United States. The new year is the perfect time for students to set educational and personal goals for the semester. Most of the time, goals are best accomplished when one has the proper support and direction. After speaking with your child about what he/she would like to achieve in the new year, you may consider the benefits of a mentorship. Mentoring helps enhance students’ chances for success while providing professional socialization and personal guidance. In addition to being taught interpersonal skills, mentoring also provides new experiences and positive values. A mentor is important for all students because they help empower students to become autonomous learners.

There are many resources online to help you find a mentorship program that best suits your child. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a non-profit organization whose goal is to help all children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with volunteer mentors. You can find their program in the Corpus Christi area by visiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas.

Additionally, there’s MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, which allows you to search through their database for programs in your area and includes plenty of information about mentoring. You may also find more opportunities through your school’s guidance counselor.
